Image advice - best results for canvas printing

While most image types can be used for canvas printing unsurprisingly, the better the quality of those images used in the printing, the better the final product - so it's up to you to ensure the best possible quality so that your canvas print will fulfil all of your expectations.

Most people are going to be looking to their digital camera images as a source for their final wall art. The size of these images is dictated by the MP - the megapixel potential - which establishes how large the final image will be and consequently will dictate by what factor it can be effectively magnified for your canvas print. Both compact and SLR digital cameras these days usually have high mega pixel sensors of more than 5MP, which will produce big files that can easily give you A1 size photo enlargements on canvas without distorting the image at all.

But it’s up to you to set your camera to maximum quality if you're thinking of using any of the resulting images for large canvas prints for your walls. Although this means your memory card won’t hold as many images as those on lower quality settings, such images won’t be suitable for printing, so it's worth thinking ahead and sacrificing quantity for quality. Remember, if you're using an older digital camera or the camera on your phone, it's likely the MP will fall somewhere between 1MP and 3MP when set to maximum quality. Because these produce significantly lower mega pixel images you shouldn't try to enlarge them to A2 or A1 or you’ll be disappointed. The optimum enlargement you’ll achieve for canvas printing from this equipment is going to be A4 or A3 size.

Image resolution.

In order to produce really high quality prints to use when printing on canvas, it's vital you consider the resolution of your images. For best results the document resolution at actual size needs to be more than 150dpi, and you'll often find that professional printing companies will be asking for much higher resolution images if you are ordering canvas prints from them - often as high as 300dpi at actual size. However they are the experts, and they know that at this dpi you can be confident of great results.

Almost all image editing software will give you the option of creating a new document and setting the dpi yourself. This means you can then copy and paste your digital photographs onto the right size document which ensures they will be right for printing. Obviously you won't be able to do this unless you have image editing software yourself - but you could also use a professional printing company like Print-Print who offer a free image sizing service. You can just e-mail your original image file and they will size it for nothing. You'll also get an image proof e-mailed back to you so that you can check it before it’s printed, and if there are any obvious problems with the image they'll also suggest how they can be put right.

Images from websites are usually not suitable for canvas photo prints because it's pretty certain they will have been optimised for the web and reduced to the lowest possible quality while still looking good on screen. Screen resolution is set at 72dpi. Do the maths - if images are saved for display on websites at this dpi, the actual print size at 150dpi would be just a quarter of the size of the image on screen as to change the image from 72dpi to 150dpi both dimensions are halved.

Canvas prints produced by companies like Print-Print can use sophisticated computer software to enlarge images with barely any perceptible loss of clarity or detail. These programs use an algorithm (a set of detailed instructions) to create new pixels, and this is what maintains the precision of the original image. However there are limits to the quality of the original that the software will handle effectively and so that image has to be reasonably good - which again will rule out web images.
